Radio Times

Happy Friday!

I’ve got two cool bits of news to report today, that have come about as a result of doing Rampage Turbo 8 back in October. Firstly, DJ Meke (whose Nostrumo mix appeared on Sonicrampage last year) invited me to take part in DI.fm’s Oldschool Mix Marathon IV, which will be running from Thursday, 29 December 2011 at 00:00 until Friday, 30 December 2011 at 23:30. It took all of about five seconds to say yeah!

Check out who else is contributing mixes:

M-ZONE [UK]
“the godfather of UK hard trance”

PROTEUS [Finland]
“resident DJ of Superstition club]

MEKE [Finland] vs YOKO [Germany]
“Flashback duo from DI.fm”

ALLY ASYLUM (UK)
CIRILIOX (Spain)
DAVE ELYZIUM (UK)
DECK JAGGER (Finland)
DJ MINDFLASH (Austria)
INDIVIDUAL (Finland)
MARIO TEKNO (Belgium)
XYBO (Finland)

Fine company to be in! Meke asked me for an old skool trancecore mix, so I’m going to be putting together Rampage Turbo 9, and I’ve even bought in a few old skool goodies from Discogs for the ocassion! More details to come soon, but if you would like to join the Facebook event, click here.

Secondly, Stray from the Freeform Forum has been in touch to ask if I would like to be one of the residents on rotation for the Freeformaniacs show on KraftyRadio.com. Again, I’ve said yes, and I’ll be contributing an hour long old skool freeform mix about every nine weeks, probably starting some time in the new year. More details coming soon.

Exciting times!

Tuesday Goodies

Hi all, here are some goodies to cheer you up on this Tuesday evening.

First up, I’ve updated the XLR8R cue file frenzy post with five more cue files for five more mixes, including cue files for DJ Rolando, Roska, The Heatwave, 2562, and Kingdom. Enjoy!

Secondly, I recorded a grime mix about ten days ago. I’m still pondering it, but I reckon it’s a good ‘un, and having some positive feedback, I think I’ll post it as is. All instrumentals, all vinyl, all old skool. Nice.

Thirdly, I’ll be posting another guest mix in a few days, just need to write up a short post to accompany it.

Fourthly (!), I’ve been offered a slot in a DI.fm special old skool mix marathon, so I’m going to do Rampage Turbo 9 … yet more old skool freeform goodness! If you liked Rampage Turbo 8, then you’ll love this.

Finally, here’s a little treat for you; it’s an old techno mix from Brooklyn legend Frankie Bones.

Cue File Frenzy – XLR8R Podcasts

London traffic
Traffic in London … totally irrelevant to XLR8R, which is in San Francisco, but such is life

Here’s a second edition of my cue file frenzy, in which I admit to my ridiculous obsession with chopping up online mixes for my own listening pleasure … and, having come clean, decide to share the fruits of my labors with you!

This time I’ve provided cue files for 20 mixes from the XLR8R Podcast series, as curated by XLR8R Magazine.

Enjoy!

Muzik Magazine

Muzik Magazine

Here’s something that’s pretty cool:

The entire archives of Muzik Magazine

For those of you who don’t know, Muzik Magazine was a British dance music magazine that ran for a number of years from the mid-90’s. It was a competitor to Mixmag, DJ, and Ministry, as well as all of the smaller, more underground dance mags that were also around back in the day (like Wax, Dream, M8, etc). I was a pretty religious reader for a while, and then it lost its way, and then it became pretty crap, and then I stopped reading at around issue 50. Still, though, it had a good run, and it’s pretty amazing that they’ve stuck the whole archive up in PDF form for people to download. Lots of dance music history to be uncovered.

Just think kids, the British club scene used to be able to sustain multiple monthly magazines with actual full time staff and everything. Crazy concept, huh?

Cue File Frenzy – DJ Extreme’s Hardscore

two pound lobster
This has nothing to do with music, it’s just a two pound lobster I ate when I was in Canada

Here’s a new series of posts I’ll be doing on Sonicrampage, where I’ll be pointing you towards cue files that I’ve made for chopping up mixes, with a focus on specific series of mixes, either from specific sites or from specific dj’s (or from specific dj’s specific sites, if we’re really getting pedantic).

Since I bigged him up a few posts back, it’s only logical to start with DJ Extreme’s Hardscore site, which is like a digital Aladdin’s cave of old skool hardcore/jungle/drum n’ bass goodness.

Sad bastard that I am, needless to say that I’ve been chopping up some of his mixes in my (frankly limited) spare time. I know I’m not the only person who likes his mixes (cheers to PlasmaDancer for the hat tip), so hopefully this will be helpful to others!

If you want the low-down to how to use a cue file to cut up a mix, check out my (comprehensive) guide. If you already know that stuff, then you can head straight here to grab the cue files I’ve already created, which thus far includes the following mixes:

1993 Hardcore Vol. 9
1995 Jungle Vol. 7
1996 Jungle Vol. 6
1997 DNB Vol. 1
The Bristol Mix Vol. 3
Smooth Grooves Vol. 2
Smooth Grooves Vol. 4
Smooth Grooves Vol. 5
Smooth Grooves Vol. 7

If you want the full link to the cue files, it’s http://sonicrampage.org/random/cue/hardscore/.

I’ll be adding more as I cut up more mixes.

PS: If you’re DJ Extreme, I hope you don’t mind, if you do, just drop me an email at pearsall[at]gmail[dot]com and I’ll pull them down.

5 records I wish I still owned

my record collection
I still have a bunch of records!

A few years back I decided I needed to trim down my record collection, for both space and money reasons, so I ended up selling a lot of the tunes I had, across all kinds of different genres (and my Death Sentence mix was even inspired by the selling process).

Since I got it in my head that I needed to be ruthless, part of this process involved getting rid of entire genres’ worth of stuff …

Meaning no more hard house …

No more hard techno …

No more tech-house …

No more electro …

No more breaks …

Some of these decisions I’ve never really regretted (for instance, I’m not particularly bothered about having liquidated my hard house collection), but over time I’ve really come to wish that I hadn’t gotten rid of so many electro, grime, and breaks tunes. Dumb decision!

This is especially so because over the last year or two I’ve gotten quite into the nascent UK Bass scene which has emerged from the confluence of dubstep, UK Funky, grime, and other styles of music. I’ve been dabbling in buying a bit of the stuff (funds allowing, I’m a dad now after all!), which has made the regrets stronger, and I even got to play a set of it at my friend Al’s birthday party last week (grab his great Machines Ate My Vinyl mix if you’ve not got it yet!), which just made the regret stronger.

Having been moodily contemplating this stuff over the last few days, I thought I would chuck up a post on five records that I used to own, sold (often for pretty shitty amounts!), and now wish I still owned. Pheh.

Goodies Ahoy

If you love jungle, old skool hardcore, and/or drum n’ bass (and if not, what’s wrong with you?!?!), you simply have to check out Hardscore, DJ Extreme’s site. I heard a few of his mixes via Drum Trip (a good site, too), but had never got around to checking out his own site.

Oh.

My.

God.

It’s the motherfucking mix motherlode. I’ll be grabbing stuff off there for ages to come.

Run, not walk.

(ok, that statement makes no sense on the internet, but you get my drift)
