Tuesday Time Machine: Alex Reece – Basic Principles (Dillinja Step 1)

Alex Reece - Basic Principles (Dillinja Step 1)

An occasional feature where I grab a record from my collection … and write about it

On today’s edition of the Tuesday Time Machine, we are going to look back at a vintage, yet relatively unknown, Dillinja remix – his 1995 remake of Alex Reece’s Basic Principles on Metalheadz. Unlike a lot of Dillinja’s most famous tunes from that era, this is not a tear-your-face-off Amen smasher designed to completely annihilate the dancefloor. Something like that wouldn’t really make sense, given the fact that the original, in true Alex Reece style, was a mellow, jazzy roller designed for the dreamier floors (and for top-down summer driving). So, instead of going completely berserk, the Dilli-man reaches a nice compromise, draping Reece’s summery chords and vocal vamps over some properly iron-plated drums and stomach-punching bass that hint at the total madness that Dillinja so often unleashed. However, by practicing some restraint, this tune retains a versatility that it might not have if it really went balls to the wall. As such, it can work either as a tougher moment in a mellower set, or as a lighter moment in a harder set, or just as a nice vibing tune in the midst of a rollers selection.

Plus, because it is not one of his better known tunes, it is available really cheap on Discogs.

Old School Mix Marathon V

Seven fresh mixes of old skool goodness from DI.fm’s Old School Electronica Channel, plus a selection of classic 90’s mixtapes

For the second year running, Sonicrampage is very happy to present the official blog post to accompany the Old School Mix Marathon V, a very special project organized by Finland’s DJ Meke in conjunction with Digitally Imported’s Old School Electronica channel to celebrate the best in old school rave music (click here to check out the Old School Mix Marathon IV). As I said before, the goal of this project is to “create a series of old skool mixes from across a range of harder dance music styles, mixed by dj’s from across Europe, that would showcase the amazing music made in the 90’s to nostalgiacs and newcomers alike.”

This year’s edition certainly does that, with specially created mixes covers everything from hard trance to rave to Goa trance to, from myself, acid techno.

Here’s a quick run down of the mixes:

Pearsall Slaves to the Silver Box – My own contribution (of which I am working on a separate, distinct post) is another dark, rumbling acid journey, in a similar vein to previous mixes of mine like Beyond The Valley Of The Acid Vixens and The Waveform Cult. IF you like the mind-expanding capabilities of the Roland TB-303, then this is for you!
Yoko vs Meke Rave’O’Lution – The DI.fm Flashback team deliver 80 minutes of relentless European hard trance, covering both classics and obscurities, as well as some modern takes on the classic hard trance sound from Sound Spectre, Artemis Wave, and Yoko himself. High bpm’s, lots of acid, and gigantic melodies … what’s not to love?
Dawn vs Meke RetroActive VI – Meke’s second appearance, alongside Germany’s DJ Dawn, is another headfirst dive into vintage hard trance, with Dawn’s set covering the anthems, while Meke works in some obscurities from SDD label compilations (and I’ll stick my hand up here and say that I’ve never heard any of these tunes before!)
Dave Elyzium Classic Goa & Morden OMGoa – Both Welsh hard trance dj/producer Dave Elyzium and Finnish dj Morden deliver awesome hour long sets of 90’s Goa trance. I haven’t really listened to this stuff in a while … and so I had forgotten how good it is. It’s easy to joke about psytrance and all of its ‘herders of the moon goat’ hippy baggage, but tune wise this early punchy Goa stuff was pretty damn good. I definitely recommend grabbing both mixes if you like psytrance, or even if you are just curious.
Yoko RetroRaveTekk – Yoko’s second mix is a vintage selection of punchy early 90’s rave music, that rich brew of innovation, rip-offs and general dancefloor lunacy from continental Europe that existed at the moment before hardcore, trance, and techno all became distinct genres with rigidly set boundaries. Awesome.
Spacehopper Classic Gabber – Last but very much not least is this absolutely storming set from Spacehopper, covering some of the greatest ever moments in hardcore techno history. Not for the faint-hearted, this high-velocity brain-shredder of a set brings together awesome tunes from the likes of Hellfish, Tieum, Dolphin, and more, and finishes on what is quite possibly the finest moment in hardcore history … Lenny Dee’s Forgotten Moments. Great set.

Tuesday Time Machine: The Two G’s ‘Energy’ (Vintage Goldie and A Guy Called Gerald Collaboration from 1995!)

Evening! Here’s a new feature I’ll be doing from now on (hopefully) … the Tuesday Time Machine!

Every Tuesday I will reach into my record shelves and pull out one vintage tune from yester-year to share with you, and briefly rabbit on about.

Juice Box RecordsTo kick things off, here’s ‘Energy’ by The Two G’s, a 1995 collaboration from two of the absolute pioneers of drum n’ bass music, Goldie and A Guy Called Gerald. Originally released on Gerald’s Juice Box label, this tune was also later released in an extended form on Gerald’s trailblazing album Black Secret Technology, which was one of the first serious drum n’ bass artist albums – I can’t quite remember if it was literally the first, or whether that honor goes to 4 Hero’s Parallel Universe or not, but in any case it was well ahead of its time!

Lesser-known than Goldie’s own Timeless, I’ve always had a soft spot for Black Secret Technology, since it was one of the first drum n’ bass cd’s I ever bought – as well as for the obvious reason that it is absolutely brilliant! The album has sadly become a bit of an obscurity over the years, so if you’re a new school drum n’ bass fan who wants to learn more about the roots of the sound, I seriously cannot recommend highly enough picking it up if you chance across it. Wonderful album.

Every album has it’s standouts, though, and ‘Energy’, for me, was and is the highlight of Black Secret Technology. To my knowledge this tune (and its flipside ‘The Reno’) represent the only tunes that Goldie and Gerald made together, which is a shame, because this track is an absolutely gorgeous hybrid of their two distinct styles, with intricate drum programming and solid bass thumps offset by swirling pads and a lovely little vocal snippet.

This is music equally at home on the dancefloor and in your headphones.

Girdler Synthetic’s Lab 4 Tribute – A Must Listen!

clapham junctionrolling road

What are you doing right now?

Well, whatever it is, stop it. Right. This. Second.

And go listen to the new Lab 4 tribute by Girdler Synthetic, the Soundcloud player of which I have helpfully embedded above. It’s two hours of wall-to-wall amazing tunes from Lab 4, who were pretty much my favorite hard trance act of all time. I first encountered Lab 4, aged 17, at the Pendragon Summer Solstice rave in Brixton Academy, and I was absolutely blown away by the power of tunes like ‘XL6’, ‘Genetik Response’, and ‘Reformation’ (to be fair, there was a little, um, assistance in the process 😉 ), and I must have seen them at least a dozen more times over the years after that, at places like The Drome, Heaven, The Astoria, The Fridge, Camden Palace, etc, and every single time they rocked it good, and they rocked it hard, the intensity and the tempo building and building into a crescendo of fist-pumping, teeth-clenching madness. Somehow their genius transcended normal scene boundaries, with their sets destroying crusties, Antipodeans, and northern furry-booted donkmeisters with equal efficiency.

Damn, they were good.

In fact, I love them so much I was planning on doing my own tribute, but I suppose I don’t have to now!

I’ve also made a cue file, for anyone else who wants to split up this mix, which you can grab here.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
