Triple Threat

There should be three new hard house mixes up this week as I pull my finger out and do some mixes before I properly liquidate my hard house collection. The first was mixed yesterday (and is entitled ‘Twist & Shake’), the second should be done tonight, and the third will hopefully be done later this week.

All will feature a selection of classic and obscure hard house tracks, so watch this space!

be afraid …

… I’ve started buying loads of dubstep.

After several years of not buying fresh vinyl, I’ve succumbed to the urge and started buying dubstep (not a surprise I guess, given how much I’ve been listening to dubstep mixes and tracks on cd and mp3 over the last 2-3 years now).

In any case, expect some fresh mixes soon …

Other People’s Mixes I Like, Part 1: Sekklow’s ‘Mind The Step’

OK, this blog is obviously to highlight my own mixes, but occasionally if I run across something else I like, I might as well highlight it, no?

In any case, I recently downloaded Sekklow’s ‘Mind The Step’ mix from Dubstepforum.com, and I think it’s awesome. Really it is! And so, in the absence of a new mix from myself (I am still planning on doing that Karim tribute one, I just need to find the time), I might as well write a few words of praise for this mix.

Free CD Giveaway

As I was supposed to be playing drum n’ bass at my friend’s birthday party last night I decided to do a giveaway of Over The Horizon. I designed and printed out some covers and burnt off a bunch of copies of the CD to give out, but unfortunately due to a few different circumstances I never ended up playing. And, so, with about 15 odd spare copies I’ve decided to give them out through my own site to anyone who wants them.

Of course, you can download the mix from this site, but if you want a copy of the CD in its full uncompressed glory with a proper inlay, just drop a message in the comments with your email address and I will email you to get your address and post you a copy of the CD.

Please note: this is only open to people in the UK.

Temporary downtime

Apologies! My site was down for a few hours (due to my domain name renewal getting spam-filtered, I didn’t realize that my domain name ownership had expired). Fortunately, everything has now been sorted. In other news, I’ve found Rampage Teknikal 1, which I will be putting up this evening, and tomorrow/Saturday I will be putting up a new drum n’ bass mix, called ‘Death Sentence’, and over the weekend I plan to record a tribute mix to French-Moroccan hard nrg hero Karim Lamouri.

A note about the different Rampage mix series

There were five series of mixes that I started while I was living in Edinburgh to cover different styles of hard dance music, all growing out of promoting a night called Rampage:

* Rampage Audio: The flagship series, covering the latest upfront hard dance music, from techno to hard house and hard trance, with carefully selected older tunes thrown in. The first one was a back-to-back mix with Phil Zero that was originally done as a giveaway for the first Rampage party. The subsequent mixes were done by myself to showcase my sound and skills in order to get some gigs. There were six of these in total.

* Rampage Archives: These were a series of mixes that I did to showcase some of the older hard trance sounds that I was into. Despite the title, I never really played these types of tunes at Rampage, but I did enjoy doing them. There were four of these in total.

* Rampage Europa: This series was devoted to the modern sounds of European hard trance and hardstyle, but unfortunately I seem to have lost volumes two and three, although I will certainly put them up if I can locate them!

* Rampage Technikal: This series started out as a vehicle for straightforward techno mixes but morphed over time into a set of techno-inflected mixes, working house, breaks, and electro into the mix alongside techno. There were five of these in total.

* Rampage Turbo: HARDCORE YOU KNOW THE SCORE! These mixes covered music north of about 165 BPM. For the most part, these mixes were UK-style trancecore/freeform hardcore, but there was also from time to time bits of hard acid trance, European hardtrance, and gabba. There were seven of these in total.

Who am I?

I am originally from New York City, but I moved with my family to London in 1991. At the age of 15 I fell in love with dance music, with jungle (as it was then known) being the main vector of infection. A year later, having saved feverishly, I got my hands on a set of Technics 1210’s (in fact the same pair I still have in my bedroom), and, dreaming of glory, I set out to become a superstar dj!

Of course, the first problem was that I couldn’t mix and I didn’t have anyone to show me how. For years I stayed in my room blundering around, bothering the neighbours, irritating my parents, and scaring the dog. Occasionally I find a tape from that era and it’s not pretty!

Slowly but surely I figured out what I was doing, as much from standing in front of the dj booth at parties and staring as anything. By the summer of 1999, when I was 18, I figured that I had gotten to the point where I could go out and play in front of people without embarrassing myself too egregiously, so, armed with a bag bulging with banging acid techno, I hit the London squat party circuit.

That autumn I moved up to Edinburgh for university and I carried on my love affair with dance music there, becoming a regular at the infamous Studio 24 and playing at a couple of different nights before I started up a monthly club called Rampage with my good friends Phil Zero and Rob. We ran on a monthly basis for a year from February 2001, and we had guests such as K90, Medicine Man from Havok Records in Manchester, DJ Kultcha from Wasa-B in Vancouver, and Mark Tyler of No Entry Records (although that party was a total disaster!). We played acid techno, hard trance, hard house, and all other types of banging face-twisting gubbins. Although we had some brilliant nights we stopped when the management of The Venue changed and booted all of the nights that didn’t sell much booze. For some reason, that included us! For a long time I’ve been meaning to write up a proper nostalgia piece about it, but I’ve been lazy. Hmm.

After I graduated from Edinburgh in 2003 I moved back to New York, but, disliking the scene there and being less interested in going out clubbing, I stopped buying records and stopped trying to hook up dj gigs. After all, there’s only so much ass-kissing you can do, and if the scene for the music you like kind of sucks, what’s the point? Anyways, the final result was that when I moved back to London two years later my interest in being a dj was pretty much gone.

Recently though my interest in mixing has picked up again, which has meant that I have recorded several new mixes and I am planning on doing a whole range of other ones. I don’t really buy new records, so everything is now cobbled together from my old tunes in my record collection. Even so, I hope you enjoy the mixes!
