For those of you who are unfamiliar with Yaman, it was a cassette mix series that ran for years in the 90\u2019s, featuring studio mixes by some of the UK rave scene\u2019s biggest names, like Randall, LTJ Bukem, DJ Hype, Micky Finn, Jumping Jack Frost and many more. These tapes have become so revered because most of the surviving mixes from that era were live recordings from raves and pirate radio, and these big names did comparatively few studio mixes on proper equipment without mc\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>So for that mix I wanted to pay tribute to the series by focusing on tapes from 1993, a crucial year in UK rave and hardcore started to give birth to jungle; that was a very interesting year for breakbeat music! The outcome was a 30 track mix that covered everything from euphoric slammers to dark side mayhem to early jungle to prototypes of the stripped down drum n\u2019 bass sound that would emerge years later.<\/p>\n<p>The mix itself was a big success (by my modest standards!) and it\u2019s one I\u2019m very proud of, so when my friend <a href=\"https:\/\/ra.co\/dj\/valinmeclick\">Vali NME Click<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/parallaxrecordings.bandcamp.com\/music\">Parallax Recordings<\/a> got in touch to ask if I would be interested in recording a follow-up for his biweekly People\u2019s Station radio show, I didn\u2019t need to think twice!<\/p>\n<p>Vali wanted to do another 1993 mix and only focus on tracks I hadn\u2019t used (lots of tapes in 1993) and asked me to do a 1994 mix. Unlike 1993, when Yaman put out tons of tapes, in 1994 they only released mixes from five dj\u2019s:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Micky Finn<\/li>\n<li>Randall<\/li>\n<li>DJ Hype<\/li>\n<li>Peshay<\/li>\n<li>LTJ Bukem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Given that there were relatively few tapes released, this helped me come up with a plan for the mix: 20 tracks in total, four from each dj, played in sequence, following the order Micky Finn -&gt; Randall -&gt; Hype -&gt; Peshay -&gt; Bukem<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, I also wanted to avoid any tracks I\u2019d used on the 1993 mix, which reduced the pool of tracks I had to work with; fortunately I have a LOT of tracks from this era, so I had enough from each dj to make it work. I also made the decision that I wasn\u2019t going to only use tracks released in 1994; it\u2019s ok to use tracks from 1993 if they were featured on the tapes released in 1994. Lots of these tracks were still getting play time even after they were released.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s surprising is that Vali and I managed to have zero crossover in our tracks without doing any coordination; pure luck and serendipity!<\/p>\n<p>All in all, this was a fun project to put together, and I\u2019ve been very pleasantly surprised by how well it\u2019s turned out.
