I went along, checked out the sights, had a very tasty home-made brownie and played an enjoyable hour and a half of some mellower dubstep (being under strict orders to play no wobblers!). I was expanding my business early last year and heard about space being available in Hackney Wick, I moved in without knowing much about the place besides the odd squat parties in my youth.

Pearsall: What’s the idea behind the flea market? (how did it evolve, etc)

Eric: I started it back in May when I saw this gap of a hang out spot in Hackney Wick, plus people here live in massive warehouses so tend to be hauling stuff in and out as time goes on.

The first happened in the carpark of Oslo House, it proved to be a great success with about 20 sellers already set up by 10AM! It was probably due to the cloudless roasting weather.

Pearsall: What goes into organizing the event and who is responsible?

Eric: All I really had to do was set up a Facebook group and event page, and then the people just poured in with interest. I also make sure there is a functional toilet, electricity and sound system.

Pearsall: Who is participating and what are they selling?

Eric: Everyone and anyone around the area really. We have had such a large variety of stuff, from sushi and hand-made jewellery to Thai massage. I would say that the majority of stalls are run by females and we get vintage clothing the most.

Pearsall: Have you had any interaction with the council and/or the police yet?

Eric: There was a squat party next to our last market, and some of the gurners came out at around 11AM and started smashing up this seller’s car. They called the police, who came but didn’t have anything to say about the market. I even opened the barrier for them to leave.

Pearsall: What are the plans for the future?

Eric: I will do one more in August and the last one in September. The change of weather will naturally end the market for this year. I hope to keep it the way it is, relaxed and hidden.

Pearsall: Thanks!

A few more pictures:

For those who are curious, here’s my setlist:

Portishead – Strangers (Vaccine Remix) (White Label)
Breakage – Rain (Digital Soundboy)
Kromestar – Late (Southside Recordings)
Matty G – For The Smokers (Argon)
Starkey – Miracles (Jamie Vex’d Remix) (Planet Mu)
Joker – Do It (Kapsize)
Joker – Digidesign (Hyperdub)
Geiom – Reminissin’ feat Marita (Berkane Sol)
Jus Wan – The Crossing (Tube10)
The Art of Noise – Moments In Love (Caspa Remix) (White Label)
Ramadanman – Revenue (2nd Drop)
Untold – I Can’t Stop This Feeling (Hessle Audio)
Von D – Truth (Black Acre)
Silkie – Hooby (Deep Medi Musik)
Radikal Guru – Chase The Devil (Dubby)
Cooly G – Love Dub Refix (Hyperdub)
J:Kenzo – Cosmo (Argon)
Skream – Rimz (Tempa)
Sully – Flashback (Urban Graffiti)
RSD – Pretty Bright Light (Punch Drunk)
Coki – Burnin’ (White Label)
Joker & Ginz – Purple City (Kapsize)
J:Kenzo – Tekno Bass (Matty G Remix) (Soul Shakerz)
Ikonika – Direct (Hyperdub)
Martyn – Suburbia (Apple Pips)
Kito – What If (Disfigured Dubz)
Sub Scape – Nothing’s Wrong (Dub Police)
La Roux – In For The Kill (Skream’s Let’s Get Ravey Remix) (White Label)

Update July 15, 2010: For those who are interested, I’ve now done a mix featuring many of these tracks that is available here

me on the decks, in pensive mode (large version of this pic available here The Hackney Wick flea market in post-industrial Hackney Wick, East London a couple of weeks ago was good fun.
